Freaking Out

I did it. I broke down and tested A's blood sugar for the 1st time.

I picked her up from daycare with this as the day's report:
"She drank a HUGE amount of water today. She CONSTANTLY wanted water, which of course meant she had really wet diapers. Oh ya, and she ate a TON today, she was constantly asking for food".

To a "normal" mother of my daughter this would be a GREAT day!! Holy cow, she drank AND ate in 1 day!!!! Amazing!

Me, my heart sank and fear overtook me like none I've ever had. Raced home and tested.

118. I'm still not relieved. So dear readers, on a 2 yr old, with no idea when or what she last ate, is this okay?

Check her first thing in the morning, before feeding her anything. She should be between 60 and 100 with a fasting reading. And try not to panic. I know, easier said than done. I check my kids once in a while, too, so I know what you're going thru.

If you still have doubts after that, call her ped. and insist on having a test run on her. Do you have ketone strips? At 118, she's probably not spilling any, but it can't hurt to check anyway.

{{{hugs}}} Let us know how it turns out. I'll have my fingers crossed that all is ok.

To evaluate 118 you must know when she had last eaten. Do has Julia advised - check her morning fasting bg value!

Thankfully this morning, fasting was 83! I can't believe how quickly I lost all my "diabetes knowledge" and just let my fear take over when the DCP said those things......SOOOOOOOOOOO different when its your child.

Julia - I give you and the other parents out there soooooooooooo much respect!!! and it keeps growing everyday.

I think your daughter's the same age as my Boo, give or take a few days. She goes thru phases of drinking, drinking, drinking, eating, eating, eating and I'm so attuned to looking for signs of diabetes that I forget, briefly, that she's a growing kid and this is what they do. I usually send myself into a tizzy a couple of times a month. :D

Thanks for the kudos. :)

Hey, are you going to the bowling thing tomorrow?

No, I didn't know about...Come to think of it, I'm guessing everyone is still using my old email addy. I haven't seen an email re: the group in a while!

Doing the walk tomorrow, then I'll be heading to my mom's to help make my sister's baby shower favors.

I didn't know the walk was today, too. I didn't get my butt in gear to do that this year. Next year.

Maybe one of these days we'll make it to the same function!

I check both of my kids’s blood sugars at least once a week. Just whenever they seem to be acting weird, which in my house, seems to be a lot of the time. My daughters’ blood sugar was 161 once, which about sent me into a tizzy. Since then we’ve had no problems but I do check her much more often than my son now.
